![]() ![]() Within two weeks, Rita had recorded another eleven songs and gave me the tape. The text was ominous for me, a non-native, and the experience of participating in this work took on an extraordinary kind of honour. The text was especially moving, given the recent events at Oka it described, as well as the theme of gentle protest that is present in much of Rita's poetry. ![]() I (G.S.) transcribed the Oka song first in a literal, note-for-note, word-for-word fashion. I taped the other dozen songs with my old woman voice, hoping that the words were understandable, my disbelief still in mind at the turn of events. Gordon asked if he could take the song to his students at Queen's University, and later asked if I had other songs. My reaction of disbelief expressed in Micmac and English was laughable to say the least. He took my song ("Oka Song") on a cassette tape and the typed words, and returned in a day or so with the transcribed song sheet. I asked, "How in the world did he know?" as I had told only one individual. I saw this white-haired person walk up to me near my craft shop and ask if I was Rita Joe and did I want a song written on a song sheet. She told Professor Gordon Smith of Queen's University about the Oka Song when he was visiting Mr. I asked Elizabeth Cremo, the daughter of the famous fiddle champ, Lee Cremo, from Eskasoni. The Oka song became a popular, often-requested melody, so I thought I had better find someone who would transcribe it to the songsheet. I always try to move my audience in poetry and song, making fun of myself at times but always emphasizing the wronged nation, and the teachings of my cultural background. Most of the people in our country see the Native viewpoint as hearing the other side of the story. Many times I received a standing ovation. Usually when I am speaking to the audience I point out the inconsistent attitude of what happened at the time, then end my speech with the Oka song. 2 I wrote the verse from a Native viewpoint, an attempt to touch my audience and their heartstrings. The reaction was the creation of the Oka poem and the Oka song (Ex. ![]() The reaction on her part was beautiful-she understood my song and as the saying goes, "She made my day."ĭuring the Oka crisis, the incidents that happened affected me tremendously. I remember I sang it with the help of a translator doing the hand signs. Most of the tunes were for special performances of some sort, such as "The Wishing Game." I created that one for a speaking engagement at the Province House for literacy. I am a shy native so the songs were put away and I sang only when I was speaking at a school or a gathering. not knowing if I picked them up as hymn songs, the roll of an incoming wave, or wind sounds. 1 From the time I was a little girl I was what you would call a hummer. I (R.J.) was a songwriter before I became a poet. The intersection of words and music in Rita's work-an aspect we find extremely fascinating (if at times difficult for transcribing)-is at the core of the repertory of songs we have participated in "making" together. Poetry and conversation mingle in ways that are artful, and also part of the way the Spirit guides and inspires the creative instinct. 1 In conversations with Rita, I gradually came to understand that poetry is her way of expressing her story and what she considers important current themes in First Nations' culture. At that time I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Rita Joe, who was known to me as a "famous" Micmac poet. This project continued field research I (G.S.) was conducting in the summer of 1992 in Eskasoni, a Micmac reserve on the Bras d'Or Lakes about 50 kilometres from Sydney on Cape Breton Island. The article is loosely structured to hear the different voices we believe bind the work together. Our intention is to not to privilege any parts of this work over others rather, it is to share our experiences and our work in the creative spirit within which it evolved. These led to a productive association among three individuals: ourselves (Kevin Alstrup and Gordon Smith) and Micmac poet Rita Joe. However, given how many Drunk Elephant favorites I've found so far, I'm not too let down. Overall, the Lippe Balm is nice but very pricey and the two sunscreens are just too greasy. Come winter time, I will definitely need something richer and heavier. However, the formulation is not the most hydrating I've tried. It is effective and comfortable albeit very pricey. For me, this is a great lip balm that's certainly superior to the likes of Burt's Bees. It glides easily on the lips but isn't as slick as some lightweight lip balms can be therefore, it does stick around a bit longer but it's no match for heavier petroleum-based liquid lip balms (ex. Unless you have dry skin or really love that dewy look, the greasy finish may be a dealbreaker.ĭrunk Elephant | Lippe Balm ($22 CAD for 3.7 g): Lastly, the formulation suffers from the same problem as that of Umbra Sheer. It's not really noticeable unless you are standing under bright sunlight but because they are sparse and more sparkly than glowy, I find them a bit unnecessary. Additionally, Umbra Tinte has just the tiniest hint of shimmer. Therefore, the application is a bit streaky and requires some effort to ensure an even tint. I noticed that some of the pigments are either poorly-mixed or purposely encapsulated within the sunscreen. However, the color is definitely too dark for me and is suitable for those with medium or darker skin tones (NC/NW 30 and beyond). With a sheer but notable light bronze tint, this version doesn't leave behind any white cast. Made with the same base formulation as Umbra Sheer, Umbra Tinte is a tinted physical sunscreen providing the same SPF 30 UVA/UVB protection. Additionally, the white cast is quite prominent despite the fact that my skin is pretty fair to begin with. I would not use it under makeup unless I dab on only a small amount and blot before applying foundation. The greasy finish subdues a bit after 15 or so minutes but my face remains shiny unless set with a powder. Unfortunately, Umbra Sheer has issues with both as it leaves the skin with a noticeable oily, whitish residue. When it comes sunscreen for the face, I dread a greasy, slick finish and an unflattering white cast. With that said, I had no problem with the application as the sunscreen spreads easily and evenly. I realize that's a strange description but the formulation indeed has a unique, glue-like "pull". The product dispenses as a lightweight white cream that has a slightly "gloopy" texture. Infused with algae extract rich in antioxidants, sunflower sprout that neutralizes free radicals, and grape juice that soothes and calms redness, Umbra Sheer is suitable for application on the face, neck, chest, and the rest of the body. This large extent is also illustrated by the large red area in the 1969 map. Looking at the first table in the “snowfall over 30 inches” column, the February 1969 storm had an area 4.5 times larger than the March 1993 storm (16,192 vs. Well, those totals are all very impressive, but how did the “100-Hour Snowstorm” get a higher RSI score than the “Storm of the Century”? The tables below, which contain RSI scores as well as area and population information for the top 5 storms, give us the answer. ![]() Hence this storm is sometimes known as the “100-Hour Snowstorm of February 1969.” One-two punch: area and population Most of the accumulating snow in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine fell on the four days from 24 through 27 February. The primary reason for the high snowfall totals was that the storm causing all of this havoc was very slow moving, allowing snow to accumulate to these record and near-record amounts. The map shows the widespread area of snowfall in excess of 30.” Pinkham Notch had 77,” Boston 26.3,” Portland, ME, 26.9,” and Concord, NH had 28.0” of snowfall. That contributed to the February 1969 monthly total of 172.8 inches (over 14 feet), which is still their monthly record. Washington had over 4 feet of snow: 49.3 inches, which is still the one-day record. Washington in New Hampshire had over 8 feet of snow during the storm. Normally, snowfall in this country is measured in inches. ![]() The 1969 storm has some impressive snowfall totals. Map by NOAA, based on data provided by Mike Squires, NCEI. Snowfall amounts for the "100-Hour Snowstorm of 1969, which put down more than 30 inches of snow across a large part of the Northeast. It is obvious that there is a wide range of population density across the six regions where RSI is calculated. The population density in the 6 eastern regions used by the RSI is shown in the map below. So, for example, in the Northeast RSI uses thresholds of 4”, 10”, 20”, and 30.” In the Southeast the thresholds are 2”, 5”, 10”, and 15.” That way, the index takes into consideration that different parts of the country have different expectations of what is considered heavy snow. The RSI value for a specific region is based on snowfall and population information from within that region. By including population, we are taking into account how the event affected people’s lives. Scientists at NCEI and Rutgers University developed RSI which is based on the area of snowfall accumulation, the amount of snowfall, and-critically-population. There are many plausible ways one could measure societal impacts from a storm, so when it comes to rankings, the most important thing is that you come up with a reasonable method and then use it consistently. For example, a small but poorly forecast storm that strikes at rush hour has much more impact than a large well-forecast storm that strikes during a weekend. The impacts of a storm are often complicated and hard to quantify. Because of the many and varied ways snowstorms disrupt people’s lives, this is a difficult challenge. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) has received numerous requests to provide an index that objectively ranks snowstorms within different regions of the country. To answer that question, we need to give a brief description of the RSI and how it ranks snowstorms. No way! How can that be? Trying to be objective about snow Yet when we look at the ranking of all historical Northeast snowstorms, the “Storm of the Century” only finishes in second place. Using our Regional Snowfall Index (RSI), the March 12-15, 1993, event had a raw score of 22.12, making it a Category 5 storm. Snowfall amounts for the "Storm of the Century," which walloped the East Coast between March 12-15, 1993. ![]() 9/7/2023 0 Comments Xcodetools![]() However, I discovered a way to accelerate the cache regeneration to around 3 seconds, down from over 10 seconds: disable System Integrity Protection. I don't know how to stop xcrun_db from getting deleted on reboot. It's not just an app anymore, it's an operating system! Actually four operating systems, since Xcode includes simulators for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS.ĭo I have a workaround for the slowness? Yes and no. I haven't tested with Xcode 11, because it takes practically forever to download and install Xcode. I can reproduce the slowness on Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey, with Xcode 12 and 13. Why haven't I noticed the issue until now? I'm not sure, but I did recently update from Mojave to Big Sur and from Xcode 11 to Xcode 12. ![]() Clearly, the slowness here is caused by checking local files and not by waiting on a network connection. Moreover, the tools in /usr/bin/ and Xcode itself are not unsigned, they're validly signed by Apple. I can reproduce the developer tools issue with my wifi turned off, and I've verified with Little Snitch that syspolicyd does not even attempt any network connections in this case. You may remember syspolicyd as the culprit in checking notarization of unsigned executables, but this is different. The only xattr are a few #PS on files that I've opened in a text editor. I should mention that neither Xcode nor the files inside its bundle have any extended attributes. (Not all the files, though verifying the code signature of the entire gigantic Xcode bundle typically takes much longer, more like 10 minutes than 10 seconds.) So it appears that some limited kind of code signature verification is done before the xcrun_db file is written. Running fs_usage showed a lot of calls to getattrlist on files inside the Xcode bundle. I took samples of syspolicyd when this happened, and the process seemed to be spending a lot of time in the security framework checking code signing. Why does it take so long to regenerate the cache? While I was reproducing and diagnosing the issue, I noticed that when I ran a developer tool after reboot, the process syspolicyd went crazy and used almost 100% CPU until the command finished. With the cache restored, there was no longer any slowness on the first run of developer tools after reboot. Sigh.Īs an experiment, I saved a duplicate of my xcrun_db file, rebooted, and then put the duplicate in $TMPDIR. Perhaps you already see the problem here: the contents of $TMPDIR are emptied on every reboot! Thus, the first time you run a developer tool after reboot, the xcrun_db cache needs to be regenerated. (In Terminal, call echo $TMPDIR to see the temporary directory path.) The paths of Xcode and the developer tools are cached on disk in a database file named xcrun_db located in your $TMPDIR. When you attempt to run one of the developer tools, the _xcselect_invoke_xcrun function must look up the actual path of the tool. Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin/git Is your head spinning yet? The actual tools are inside the Xcode app bundle: $ xcrun -find git By the way, if you're looking for /usr/lib/libxcselect.dylib on disk you may not find it, because Big Sur. The /usr/bin/git executable on macOS is just a stub that calls the _xcselect_invoke_xcrun function in the /usr/lib/libxcselect.dylib library, which you can see by using the /usr/bin/otool command-line tool - which coincidentally is also just a stub that calls the _xcselect_invoke_xcrun function. So I tried rebooting again, and then the issue occurred again!įor the impatient who don't care to hear the story of how I discovered the cause, I'll cut to the chase.
